Once, a long time ago, the antelope and the deer happened to meet on the prairie. They spoke together, giving each other the news, each telling what he had seen and done. After they had talked for a time the antelope told the deer how fast he could run, and the deer said that he could run fast too, and before long each began to say that he could run faster than the other. So they agreed that they would have a race to decide which could run the faster, and on this race they bet their galls. When they started, the antelope ran ahead of the deer from the very start and won the race and so took the deer's gall.

Interesting
This is a book of short stories from the BLACKFEET INDIAN and there are few that are greater than the others but each one has a life lesson in it...
a lot like uncle remuss storier, but also similar to oth indian trial tails. easy to read but needs the historical part in the front instead of the back.
“Blackfeet Indian Stories” by George Bird Grinnell

Grinnell was one of the most famous and active early conservationists. As well, he was a passionate student of the indigenous tribes, especially in the West. He was an astute and honest chronicler of Indian life and ways.
This book is a collection of Blackfeet stories; some of religious/moral nature, some more of ethnic description and some merely “fun” stories that were told chiefly for entertainment.
It is a fun read and brings a more human look at the tribe with it.
This was a very approachable volume of stories from the Blackfeet Indians. The final 'story' was just facts about the life and traditions of the Blackfeet, but even that was interesting.

I also found the entire book to be almost devoid of the sort of European-biased language that I often find in books of traditional tales, which is fantastic.

The audience of this book is probably adults, or maybe older teens, but it clearly wasn't written for children, though some of the stories could probably be read to some children who like violence and polygamy.

There was one downside to the kindle edition, which is that some of the names must have had special characters that didn't scan correctly, and thus the names were written as "i-s+n?-o-kM-k+" or "Kmt-o-y-s?" which, honestly, are rather unpronounceable.

Simple but well written versions of the stories-- sometimes books like this read awkwardly, like poor translations, and other times they seem like the transcriber put too much of themselves into the stories-- Grinnell seems to have hit a good balance. Although I can't say what a member of one of the Blackfoot nations would think of the book.
An interesting collection of Blackfeet Indian legends of creation, tradition, and fire-side stories told on a rainy night to amuse the children. The stories were collected by the author George Bird Grinnel (1849-1938) who was an American anthropologist, historian, naturalist and writer (wiki). He was an early conservationist (American bison) and student of Native American life. He explored extensively in the American plains and had opportunity to come in contact with the native Indians. Many stories display a belief in animism. The stories show the cultural relation between men and women, tribal hierarchy, Indian hunting technology, living conditions. The last chapter, The Ancient Blackfeet, gives a good account of Indian life.
